Greenlight given for Prestatyn social homes development
Work is set to begin on new Prestatyn apartments for tenants with limited mobility this November.
Denbighshire County Council Cabinet members have agreed the appointment of a contractor to start construction work on 15 Council apartments for social rent at The Dell in Prestatyn.
Planning permission for the detailed design of the development on the Council owned land was agreed at September’s Planning Committee.
North Wales based builders RL Davies & Sons Limited will carry out the development on behalf of the Council.
Five apartments specifically designed for wheelchair users will be built on the ground floor and on the upper floors there will be a total of ten apartments, which will be accessible by lift and adaptable for tenants with limited mobility. There will be seven one-bedroom apartments and eight two-bedroom apartments in the block.
There will be a parking space for each apartment and three spaces for visitors.
The apartments will also be low carbon in operation through the inclusion of renewable energy and heat technologies and will help to deliver the Council’s Climate & Ecological Change Strategy. This will be achieved by avoiding the use of hydrocarbons for space and water heating in the development.
This decision supports the Council’s Corporate Plan priority to make sure that everyone is supported to live in homes that meet their needs.
It also contributes towards the Housing and Homelessness Strategy by enabling the building of accessible homes for social rent.
Cllr Tony Thomas, lead member for Housing and Communities said: “The Council is pleased to be able to move this development forward as we are fully aware from the waiting list for housing in Denbighshire that there is a need for apartments in Prestatyn which are suitable for older people.
“This Council owned land is a great location for such a development because it has level access to the nearby shops and services in the town centre.
“By creating accommodation like this we can support people in staying in their own homes longer. This is part of the commitment in our Corporate Plan to work with people and communities to provide more housing and build independence and resilience.”
Construction work is due to start on site soon with completion following in autumn 2022.
